Love Aaj Kal. It’s OK.
A couple of disclaimers that i am piling on, at the beginning…forget abt the brilliance of jab we met. and do not go in just because TOI gave it a 4 star rating.
Now for the positives:
1. Brilliant dialogues. Most of us will be able to relate to them, although at times they can get a bit too stretched, specially when saif confusingly and lovingly murmurs to himself
2. Deepika is looking fabulous. And she can act too. She has not tried to act much, and her act has come quite naturally, so perhaps thats what she should now be doing. act naturally.
3. The 1960s look has been captured exceptionally well.
4. Saif has done a fairly good job of managing a double role. Believable, though he has looked a bit tired at quite a few places in the movie. Perhaps the additional pressures on producer sahab
5. The cute rishi kapoor story and the integration of past and present and how things move in parallel
But, if so many things are positive, then why must the movie be OK and not brilliant? That’s what i have been trying to figure out. Perhaps i went in with very high expectations. As a stand alone movie, its not bad. But contrary to what TOI writes, i liked the first half much more than the 2nd. The 2nd half is a bit complex and too wordy/preachy. Not preachy in a preachy way, but a lot is left for the viewers to understand on their own, and perhaps sort out their complex love lives.
Overall, a nice attempt. Watchable for sure. Cute and different beginning, a nice and cute climax, and some hilarious moments in between. The mango people will like the movie. And for sure, given the way all halls were booked on friday, the movie is on its way to being a super hit. It will end at about 80 crores over the next 3 weeks.
