The week just gone by has been amongst the most memorable one for me. To call it a roller coaster ride of emotions would probably be an understatement. In the first half of the week, here i was, settled well in the fastest growing and the best real estate portal in India, makaan.com, surrounded by a set of marvelous and brilliant colleagues. A great office environment, a new-age internet firm, heading their marketing division, home 10 minutes away….and i was having a good life. Considerations about my new job had been going through my mind everyday, but I did not finally decide till the day before i joined where i have now joined. And this is perhaps where the roller coaster ride begins.

For the next 18 months or so, I will be part of a government setup. I spent the latter half of this week immersed and engrossed in a sea of files. A world where downloading means taking printouts of emails. A world where each email gets printed, for action to be taken. A world where the well-oiled and nearly perfected email system has been transformed to a physical world. A place where things usually move a bit slower than what i had come to terms with, through the 6 years in MNC environments. Having said that, this is where my misery ends. Fortunately, i am now in a system, which has a large number of influential and efficient people, and together, we all know what is to be done, by when. The Commonwealth Games, to be held in Delhi in October 2010, is where I have formally joined. And as Director, Director General’s Office, I look forward to a truly memorable 18 months. I do not know where I will be when the games get over. I wish I was more far-sighted when it comes to career moves. Somehow, I’ve just gone by what my heart told me. I suddenly decided i was wasting my time in HP, and moved to cognizant. To spend perhaps the best time of my professional life. Fabulous Fabulous colleagues. And i’ll always miss the entire bunch. And then i moved to marketing, at makaan.com. Without much practical branding experience, i managed to get national visibility to this great portal, and i’ll always feel happy about it. But perhaps, the time had come, when i stood up to face a new set of challenges. That was perhaps the biggest reason for the latest move. A project of this size and complexity comes very rarely. And to be in the middle of this action and mayhem, is a different kind of high. All I know, is, that the next 18 months are going to be the defining time of my career. This is perhaps the first and only blog post i will write related to the commonwealth games. And it’s not because i may need to dictate that post to someone, who will then prepare a document, to be signed by 5 different offices, and once approved, will be typed through my blog admin panel…! It’s because i’ll probably not want to take any chances with this opportunity that i have got. While at one level, i’m a bit nervous, thinking about the drastically different work culture. But at another level, i also feel liberated, and it is this freedom and responsibility, which i am going to enjoy to the fullest. Tadah.

Long, long time ago in India, companies were left puzzled when they saw their profit figures and the footfall of customers dwindle for no apparent reason. She reluctantly agreed and started listing down objective observations and left everyone astonished. The managers got to work and acted on the feedback. Within no time, the good old days of the store returned and shoppers like Mrs. Sharma were secretly commissioned to maintain high standards of customer service and thereby improving the shopping experience delivered in every industry.
