Aamir Khan has a knack of awakening the collective conscience of a society too deeply smug and hypocritical. Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots are fabulous examples of the impact that a movie can have on an entire society. Lagaan was about team work, and what it means to be a good leader. Rang De Basanti went far in inculcating a patriotic fervor in our youth, which countless speeches by politicians and millions of DAVP advertisements could not do. Taare Zameen Par helped India rewalize how kids need to be treated and cared for, and educated. And 3 Idiots has famously blasted our obsession with IITs and IIMs. It truly has been a privilege to watch 3 idiots at the beginning of a new year; quite akin to the feeling of saluting the human spirit, which came by after watching Avatar on the last day of 2009. While Avatar, for me, was 2.5 hours of amazement, at what is capable of being achieved, of the achievement that singular, focused vision can attain, 3 Idiots was a salute to highlighting a issue i have always been aware of.

3 Idiots is an expression of one’s individuality. It’s about doing what you think is right. It’s about believing in yourself, and pursuing it with complete honesty and dedication. Its about questioning the norms. About developing an ability to ask questions, irrespective of how dumb others may find it, or what implications the question may have. Its about lateral thinking. The irony for me is that though i have always thought this way, i myself have been very much part of this system. With the IIT and the IIM tags attached, I have always been part of this rat race. Of our marks mentality. Of educating myself not because i want to be educated this way, but because my society has defined for me, right from childhood days, that this is the best that’s possible. And hence it needs to be achieved. I became a Chemical engineer not because i wanted to be one, but because that was the best option for me, if i wanted to graduate with a IIT tag. I became an MBA from IIM after just 1 year of corporate experience, because my society was sure that an engineer needs to have an IIM degree as the best possible professional combination in India. Most of our youth pursuing engineering do not care what branch they get. Most of them get absorbed in IT. And hence, what they learn never really finds the right outlet. Most of our MBAs are ‘fresh’, and they do not know what is best for them. They just chase the companies which give them the highest salaries. There must be some merit in the fact that most MBAs in the developed world are non-engineers and most of them have 5+ years of work experience before they are allowed to do an MBA?

Even before my child was born, i have been fairly clear in letting her be. Just be. My role model is Calvin, that 6 year old genius who, for me, defines what a child must be like. Oodles of lateral thinking, the ability to ask a question every minute throughout the day, a knack for challenging each and every thing which is considered accepted by the society around him. That’s how our children need to be. And that’s how I wish i was. Since i could not, i simply want my child to be that way. We never stop her from asking questions. We rarely scold her for making a mess of the house. We let her imagination run equally wild from ranbir uncle to pocket me rocket to alphabets to nursery rhymes to understanding inter-dependencies between things. Look around you. The kids are getting burdened by the education. By the parents who are more into teh rat race with other parents. The obsession to ensure the child stays in the top 10 of the class. Rarely do i find kids playing outside these days. Even if they do, its more like a quota system. 1 hour at max, and then back to studies. Please, let children be children. Let them play for as long as they want. Look beyond education and their books and the rat race you are forcing on to them. Think beyond the philosophy of ‘doing to them what has been done to you’. Think fresh. Let them take charge of their life. Let them decide for themselves what works best for them. And trust me, they will. With this, let me once again salute Aamir Khan, Vinod Chopra and Raju Hirani for creating 3 Idiots. And Aamir Khan, for knowing what plagues us, and highlighting that time and again. Sure he did indulge in some over the top acting in 3 Idiots, primarily to look like a 20 year old. He did appear nerdic in some scenes. But then, he started his career looking like a 21 year old. Then again with Dil Chahta Hai in his thirties and now he is back to playing the same age in his forties. What more can we expect from this versatile genius? I await the next cause that mr perfectionist highlights!

Last 2 days, i’ve had the chance to repeatedly listen to the music of Ishqiya. And what a magnificent soundtrack it is! Gulzar saab and Vishal Bhardwaj have combined yet again to deliver a masterpiece. The lyrics that Gulzar saab writes for Vishal are, quite simply, magical. A brief opinion on the music, then..

ibn-e-batuta is the most commercial of its tracks, and quite expectedly, is doing the rounds of all music channels, trying to garner eyeballs for the movie. It’s not bad, actually, but pales in comparison to the other 3 songs which make up the album.

Dil to Bachha hai is an outstanding composition, with brilliant lyrics, and sung extremely well by rahat ali khan. quite unlike the style of singing of rahat, and hence, so refreshingly different and soothing.

Ab mujhe koi instantly takes you back to the jagjit singh / chitra singh days. classically ghazal oriented, rekha bhardwaj has done an exceptional job on this song. It just keeps growing on you, no matter how many times you listen to it.

Badi dheere jali is again sung by rekha, and though a tad too slow, it is a brilliantly sung and composed song. its completely classical, and i can’t recall when i last heard a classical song in a mainstream commercial bollywood movie.

Both these songs are sheer gems & have a fantastic appeal from start to end. The quintessential Vishal Bharadwaj and Gulzar, first seen in Maachis, and last in Kaminey, remains as magical as a Bollywood soundtrack could promise. Remember ‘Naina Barse’ from omkara, or ‘paani paani’ from maachis? These 2 songs are quite in that mode. Perhaps better.

The remixes for dil to bachha hai and 2 for ibn-e-batuta have been done, as the trend has been for composers these days to release albums with remixes built in. a quentin tarantino touch exists in them, the way the music starts on these remixes. again, its no secret that vishal is a big fan of tarantino, so quite expected that music follows that affection..

Verdict. Listen to Ishqiya. Sit back with a drink in your hand. And relax.

I have expressed my love for swift diesel on a number of occasions, specially as i was amongst its earliest adopters, having purchased the beauty within a week of its launch in february 2007. Almost 3 years on, i must admit, yet again, that Swift diesel is a stunning piece of machinery. And some reasons for this are:
1. I go from 0-100 kmph in about 6-7 seconds
2. I have managed to attain 170 kmph as my top speed, and the brilliance being that swift gets there quite effortlessly. On NH8, on a daily basis, i touch 150, which makes it an absolute pleasure to drive
3. Considering my rather rash driving instinct, and preference to use AC even in winters, it is rare to find a car which gives me a mileage of 18 kmpl regularly. In fact, in the last 2 months, i have gone to about 670 kms in a single full tank!
4. The car is designed to give complete driver comfort, the way the windows wrap around you, and the high seating. The clear focus is on driving pleasure
5. The back seat comfort is fairly good, with high seating, good leg room (though they did compromise a bit on the trunk space, which is quite bad), but for a family of 3, this has never really been a constraint
6. Though a diesel, there’s hardly the noise and pollution that Indians had come to expect from a diesel car.

All in all, i would just urge anyone planning to buy a small car, and who is willing to stretch the budget a bit, go for a swift diesel. Even if you are planning a mid size sedan, try gong for a swift diesel, as you will find it very hard to match the driving pleasure that this beauty / beast can give you!

A couple of disclaimers that i am piling on, at the beginning…forget abt the brilliance of jab we met. and do not go in just because TOI gave it a 4 star rating.

Now for the positives:
1. Brilliant dialogues. Most of us will be able to relate to them, although at times they can get a bit too stretched, specially when saif confusingly and lovingly murmurs to himself

2. Deepika is looking fabulous. And she can act too. She has not tried to act much, and her act has come quite naturally, so perhaps thats what she should now be doing. act naturally.

3. The 1960s look has been captured exceptionally well.

4. Saif has done a fairly good job of managing a double role. Believable, though he has looked a bit tired at quite a few places in the movie. Perhaps the additional pressures on producer sahab

5. The cute rishi kapoor story and the integration of past and present and how things move in parallel

But, if so many things are positive, then why must the movie be OK and not brilliant? That’s what i have been trying to figure out. Perhaps i went in with very high expectations. As a stand alone movie, its not bad. But contrary to what TOI writes, i liked the first half much more than the 2nd. The 2nd half is a bit complex and too wordy/preachy. Not preachy in a preachy way, but a lot is left for the viewers to understand on their own, and perhaps sort out their complex love lives.

Overall, a nice attempt. Watchable for sure. Cute and different beginning, a nice and cute climax, and some hilarious moments in between. The mango people will like the movie. And for sure, given the way all halls were booked on friday, the movie is on its way to being a super hit. It will end at about 80 crores over the next 3 weeks.
