Aamir Khan has a knack of awakening the collective conscience of a society too deeply smug and hypocritical. Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots are fabulous examples of the impact that a movie can have on an entire society. Lagaan was about team work, and what it means to be a good leader. Rang De Basanti went far in inculcating a patriotic fervor in our youth, which countless speeches by politicians and millions of DAVP advertisements could not do. Taare Zameen Par helped India rewalize how kids need to be treated and cared for, and educated. And 3 Idiots has famously blasted our obsession with IITs and IIMs. It truly has been a privilege to watch 3 idiots at the beginning of a new year; quite akin to the feeling of saluting the human spirit, which came by after watching Avatar on the last day of 2009. While Avatar, for me, was 2.5 hours of amazement, at what is capable of being achieved, of the achievement that singular, focused vision can attain, 3 Idiots was a salute to highlighting a issue i have always been aware of.

Last 2 days, i’ve had the chance to repeatedly listen to the music of Ishqiya. And what a magnificent soundtrack it is! Gulzar saab and Vishal Bhardwaj have combined yet again to deliver a masterpiece. The lyrics that Gulzar saab writes for Vishal are, quite simply, magical. A brief opinion on the music, then..

I have expressed my love for swift diesel on a number of occasions, specially as i was amongst its earliest adopters, having purchased the beauty within a week of its launch in february 2007. Almost 3 years on, i must admit, yet again, that Swift diesel is a stunning piece of machinery. And some reasons for this are:
1. I go from 0-100 kmph in about 6-7 seconds
2. I have managed to attain 170 kmph as my top speed, and the brilliance being that swift gets there quite effortlessly. On NH8, on a daily basis, i touch 150, which makes it an absolute pleasure to drive
3. Considering my rather rash driving instinct, and preference to use AC even in winters, it is rare to find a car which gives me a mileage of 18 kmpl regularly. In fact, in the last 2 months, i have gone to about 670 kms in a single full tank!
4. The car is designed to give complete driver comfort, the way the windows wrap around you, and the high seating. The clear focus is on driving pleasure
5. The back seat comfort is fairly good, with high seating, good leg room (though they did compromise a bit on the trunk space, which is quite bad), but for a family of 3, this has never really been a constraint
6. Though a diesel, there’s hardly the noise and pollution that Indians had come to expect from a diesel car.
